p.s. found out the issue with my comms to the Optimiser lcd crapping out - there is a problem with the backlight circuit. Once again* I had inadvertently hit the switch for the back light (with gloves or something) and just noticed that after about a minute the lcd display fades away. The wee circuit for the backlight must be buggered - still not made up the new board you sent me - that will be a winter proj. I have a massive tyrap holding the Cat 5 cable in place and pared back the cable sheath to allow a better 90 deg angle out of the box as it were.
* it was the LC1 calib switch dragging the power out of the battery last time - must be old timers disease!!

Double check the orientation of the transistor that drives the back light. There were some boards where the overlay was incorrect.
Compare the orientation on the My16M ( earth pin towards comms plug ) and the Optimiser ( earth pin away from chip.
