Title: Assistance req'd -1100 Sporti loom
Post by Mad Farquhar on 05/20/12 at 14:37:00
Having removed the engine and gearbox of my machine to have a gearbox problem sorted I now have a wee problem remembering where to put the wires!
The attached pic shows the 2 ring terminals coming off the loom below the seat. The red one goes to the gearbox support casting which is retained by 4 bolts and the red ring terminated wire but er... um.. eh... where did the longer yellow marked one go er.. em.. doh..
:-/

Sorry,  no Sporty in my garage, but what if you just isolate it and look what function is missing once you start her up (hopefully not the 'start up' itself ;))

Thx Hubert
I believe it's an earth and long enough to go to the starter but there does seem to be a lot of them there already! Wish I'd marked them up or taken clearer pics in January when I started the destruct. The trouble is most people retain the air filter box which shrouds this area so it's difficult to see clearly. No rush as I'm still fettling and don't have time until next week when off work to continue the rebuild. Maybe have it back on the road end of next week with any luck.
Temperatures here in the east of "bonnie" Scotland are finally climbing after incessant cold damp easterly winds off the North Sea. There is still skiing available on the mountains - unusual for end of May here normally.

An earth should have two ends, so perhaps you could out measure this option. Or try to find a connected pin inside the ecu connector and look it up in a manual.
Over here the weather is way to warm and dry, the farmers are rather pissed than pleased. I'm onroad since the end of March so I at least can't say anything negative.

Are you a relative to the racer/manager Farqhuar, btw?

I'll have a look at my Sporti tomorrow (unless I forget) and see if I can find it. I do have the air box in place though.

With an ohm meter, see which pin on the ECU connector it goes to. That might give a clue.

Is  your 1100 sport a V11 or one of the earlier models?

Er no.. the name Mad Farquhar contains a bit of a play on the second word. In my neck of the woods there is a tendency to pronounce it as a bad word :D. We also have a problem with the glottal stop.

Oh, I see :) So probably the real one always has a card at hand if he's asked to introduce himself.

Hey, isn't it simply the neutral switch from the gearbox? Pro: I can't see which would be that one otherwise. Con: it should not be a ring terminal afaik, but a spade female.

Wish it was that simple Raz - I have the two spade terminals - one for the starter and, the other for the neutral, identified. Beginning to piss me off (i.e. my stupidity). Hopefully tomorrow I'll probe it out, finished work for the week now and have some time to spare.

OK, so how about this theory: Both go to the gearbox mount. Here is a picture from 2006 (before I messed much with my bike). I can't see it IRL now without removing air box but on this picture there really seem to be two of them. This may make some sense depending on where they each go from there.

Hm, but yours seem awfully long. It's not one of the two that goes to the ECU cover? I think you can see them too on my picture.

I think raz is on the money. I had a look at my V11 but they are different set up to the pics Raz posted.

OK - fresh day and a re-look. The errant ring terminal has 2 reds crimped onto it underneath the overlay. It can only reach stuff within about 300mm radius. I relooked at the diagram above and another in the techie manual which led me to check out the starter - once again (fixation time!).
Here is a pic of my starter solenoid and the wires - presently going to it. I taped them all together so have  bit of confidence they are correct. They correspond to Carl Allisons colour code diag also however - are there enough of them?

Bingo - it goes to the starter solenoid - so.... which one of the ones I have mounted on the starter solenoid should go elsewhere! It might be the black one which then goes over the other side to mate with the one on the gearbox hanger - this would tie in with the two in Razs pic. Jeez - nothing's simple in Luigis layout but maybe, just maybe slightly, very slightly quasi-intuitive.

I'm not dead certain everything is correct on this but it may help.

Carl - you are a star!

Let's see if that star still shines if there are errors on that diagram, I'm fairly certain some of the plugs for FI in the middle are messed up. I'm getting ready to hash around in the wiring on my Sporti in a couple of weeks so at least I'll finally be able to sort it out.

Had a quick look at the schematic last night w.r.t. relays - I got a bit confused withthe numbering around the fuses and relays - or are there mistrakes in that area?
Looks useful though for eedjits like me. :-?

Is this any help?
With the battery disconnected see if there's any continuity between the lug and the frame, ECU case. battery positive
You can safely ground the wire through a tail lamp bulb to see if it activates anything. It's not the neutral light is it?
