More rigid Optimiser
05/29/09 at 21:24:40

Does anyone have ideas to share for making the Optimiser weather proof?

I've found buttons (ITW series 59, IP67) of infinitely higher quality than the originals, but they seem to be a very tight fit in the casing. Also, the casing itself is not precisely weather proof and I've yet to find a good one of correct dimensions.

I haven't found any good potentiometers. And I thought I could find some display front that would seal from water, but I found none.

When I opened the case for investigating how to fit my new buttons, I could confirm there is corrosion on the PCB, witnessing there has been some water inside the case even though I don't have it mounted in rain, driving or not.

There is another aspect too, even though it is second priority, and that is looks. I don't need the Optimiser to look like a propeller head toy. People think I'm nuts as it is  Cool

Any good ideas welcome!

Perhaps put in some of those desicant packs, at least they would adsorb any moisture that does get in, try to get the ones that change colour when wet. Thanks for your help with my kit.

Good to see you here, Roy. I did consider those packs but I think they'll just be soaked. Some lacquer on the PCB along with a well placed draining hole in the case will do for now.

They sure are  Smiley

One of my neighbours thought I had less "problems" with my bike this year as I don't hook up the computer to it anymore. I didn't tell him I run wireless now  Grin

I finally got inspired enough to install the mentioned buttons and they do barely fit in the original casing. I drilled 12mm and used thicker (12x2mm) o-rings than those included with the buttons. I also sprayed the PCB with protective coating to help against moisture.

It now looks a little more professional, and more important it should be way more weather tolerant.

BTW I also fitted the Bluetooth dongle inside the Optimiser, together with a switch that disables the Optimiser and turns it to just a bluetooth tranciever. The dongle itself fits nicely on an area of the PCB that happens to have the right size. I just used adhesive pads. Of course, there are pros and cons of having it inside the Optimiser inside of a separate smaller dongle.

I also looked at the possibility of making the optimiser water proof / resistant especially living in the wettish area of the UK where the joke goes: If you can't see the island of Skye it's raining, if you can see Skye then it's about to rain.
However I have gone the route of re-modelling the instrument housing completely as I have also given up on the original cable (always failing) powered speedo. Incorporated an oil gauge in addition to led warning lamp. The mini speedo incorporates other idiot lights and is a lovely bit of germanic "precison made" stuff.

This is the first attempt - not installed correctly nor full commissioned yet:-

What is that frame around the display? I searched for framing that would provide a little weather proofing but there seemed to be none available made for it. I sealed it with some kind of epoxy but it doesn't look very professional.

Model shops sell plastic card or trims in various shapes and sections. I used a T section and mitred to fit the cut out in the 4mm alloy. Made a slight mistrake in the cut out so acts as a fill in too! The buttons are from RS components (UK) - a bit er,..garish in hindsight. As stated elsewhere waterproofed pot(s) are the parts I also couldn't source. About to work out how to keep the reverse water-tight. Considering moulding a small fibre shell for the lcd and possibly infilling with resin or desiccant or sikaflex. Dunno - will keep you posted. Wired up yesterday and all seems fine. Used scart cable to interconnect - plenty of cores and relatively easy to prevent confustication of connections. The final mac design was printed full size then glued to plate. Drilled and cut mostly by hand (laser cut??) then finished off with paint and a printed logo lacquered on. Quite enjoyed doing it - made up for inactivity due to damaged knee ligaments.

On other section of forum question on speedo selected - search for motogadget. Uses trundle wheel principle unless there is an oem transducer to use. Not cheap but really quite "beautiful".

I put o-rings between knobs and case, hoping it will keep most of the water away from the inside. The supplied potentiometers actually don't look that bad, maybe they seal pretty good between the stationary and moving parts of the axle.

Guys, don't sweat the small stuff, swipe a bit of grease around the rotary shaft and you won't have problems with water entering the pots. I would be more concerned about water leaking in around the joints in box lid, there again some grease on the joint will help keep the water out. I would use regular vaseline or If you don't have to remove it silicone sealant (it works in your bathroom, it'll work on your bike).
I swear by vaseline for all electrical contacts and battery terminals, by taking up the gaps it leaves no room for air or moisture.

I was delighted to find this pic of Cliff's first Optimiser from June 2002. Now I think my Optimiser look very good  Smiley

And here is my water proof one:

The epoxy around the display is awful and that also whitened the plastics here and there, otherwise I'm fairly satisfied with this.
