Is your parallel port via PCMIA or a standard parallel port ?
I don't know of anyone who has used the former. That might be too optimistic.

Via a quatech spp 100 pcmcia parallel port dohingky. Set i/o range to 0378-037F and it seems to work. Low voltage was a thought at first but it does appear to punch through to the chip. It's by no means a cheap interface.

I think the timing is marginal.  If you keep retrying one will work. If think it was about 5 goes for the last go.

What do you mean the "timing" is marginal? Why does it not work first off and what causes this issue? Curious as I have invested a significant amount of time/ resources to get to this point and should I not be able to proceed would be miffed to say the least. Cry

I don't know the exact details, this is a third party tool after all, but if you look at the avrdude configuration file you'll see its full of magic timing constants.
There's a lot of bit banging done on the parallel port to talk to the Atmel chip. Normally a parallel port is easily accessed by the CPU with little overhead. I don't know the details of PCMCIA but if there an extra level of stuffing around to read or write the parallel port, that timing difference could be enough to throw the timing off.

Just try it a half dozen times and see if one completes successfully.

I have a hunch (I know that is vague but it's a gut feeling from 30 years computer experience) that it's not a problem with parallel port being pcmcia.

I also have had the exact same problem and I damn myself for not remembering what solved it. Just retrying will help, but I'm sure I had a better answer one year ago. Just can't remember it. I know I have flashed with ECU powered just by a 9V battery and that MAY have been part of the problem. But I have a feeling it was something else... I'll sleep on it and see what comes out.

Edit: Now my random (as in random) access memory begin to respond: I had this problem. I could retry 100 times, no go. Then I cut power to ECU, re-applied it and tried again. Success. I think that was it. Keep retrying, but do it from cold start each time. I'll fill in more info as it arrives  Smiley

Thanks guys. Like I say this operation deserves its own sub-section to assist others through what I have found a veritable minefield! I'm looking forward to actually driving the bike and not farting about with the electronic gubbins for a while although a day without knowledge is a day wasted etc etc..

Your area must be warming up too Raz? Here's to happy days to come.

I'll keep you posted and keep a tally of the flash attempts until success (fingers crossed).

Sorted! 5 attempts using Razs cycle of power to ecu. A reassuring pump hiss on completion which had disappeared yesterday. A happy bunny once again. Now - optimiser but first, coffee.

5 seems to be the magic number - optimiser also appears flashed however nothing doing on lcd. Must have screwed up with cable to device. A period of checking beckons. Angry

p.s. - just found the problem... the wires I had carefully waterproofed with silicone mastic were falling apart - must be a reaction to the chemical in the mastic- surprised it lasted so long. Never come across this before.

p.p.s. http://yarchive.net/chem/silicones.html things that make you go mmmmm...

Good news. We're getting there.
I use hot glue to hold wires and tall components etc. Does anyone no how that will fare?
Edit: I wish I could proof read better.

I once used a silicone sealer meant for sealing bathroom walls etc. to fill a Guzzi regulator I had repaired. That was a BAD idea. The aluminum casing was fine but solders and PCB tracks were not.

The hot glue seems, so far, as a good idea and I started doing that too when I replaced my ECU PCB. I haven't seen any bad signs on components, solders or tracks. I know old japanese transistor radios had wax-like stuff for the same purpose.
A good thing about the glue is that it's fairly easy to remove, yet it really supports the components. And it's not stone hard so it can flex when needed. I suppose that is a good thing when stuff heats up or colds down.

The acetic acid component smells pretty acrid on use - I should have guessed. Ironically I bought a glue gun a couple of weeks ago after considering one for about 20 years - a mate swears by them - he guillotines mitres and makes fab picture frames. Hey ho. The optimiser board has suffered too - I think Ill treat myself to a new one. It's knackered from the ravages of silicone but also several modifications and soldering / de-soldering whilst making my natty instrument cluster. Some of the tracks have suffered and it looks - well crap and suspect it wont take much more.
Cliff - how much for a new board?
p.s. - on power up I get a top line of lcd blocks (rectangles) and the lower line is top half of rectangles only. There is a slight slow pulsing and button pushes appear to change but the display shows the same characterisation. Gi'es a clue?

I've seen the top line blocks when I power up with a non programmed chip.
Does it do that after flashing? You should see the sign on after flashing.

Could be a wiring issue. Check continuity from the LCD pads to the chip pins. Use the PCB layout to see which pins.

Ok sorted the optimiser - dual probs.
1) Rerererererere - checked the wiring and then got your top line of black rectangles so
2) re re re re flashed the optimiser chip and bingo.
However there does seem to be different menu patterns - whats "nan*" and the map has 2 options. What's that all about?
Is there an update to the optimiser manual?

* I assume its nothing to do with Indian bread Smiley

It means Not a Number and can be used to show undefined stuff or similar cases. I have a vague memory of seeing that too and I think it's normal - your engine was not running and/or sensors and stuff was disconnected, right?

I've not seen nan. I'm surprised the Optimiser code have the logic to display it. Can you send me a pic of it.

There are new menu items for backup and restore map.

Backup will store a copy on the Optimiser and restore will write the Optimiser copy back.

There is no fail-safe so it is currently possible to restore before a backup is taken. Also the engine should be not be running when these are done.

Typical - can't replicate it now! Might it have been before I backed up the map? I aborted by switching off as I didn't know what was going on. On power up again it may have produced "nan"  Took a pic of the lcd with some other numbers which I don't recognise though:-
