p.s. found out the issue with my comms to the Optimiser lcd crapping out - there is a problem with the backlight circuit. Once again* I had inadvertently hit the switch for the back light (with gloves or something) and just noticed that after about a minute the lcd display fades away. The wee circuit for the backlight must be buggered - still not made up the new board you sent me - that will be a winter proj. I have a massive tyrap holding the Cat 5 cable in place and pared back the cable sheath to allow a better 90 deg angle out of the box as it were.
* it was the LC1 calib switch dragging the power out of the battery last time - must be old timers disease!!

There were some boards where the overlay was incorrect. Compare the orientation on the My16M ( earth pin towards comms plug ) and the Optimiser ( earth pin away from chip.
